The United States Parachute Association is an association that involves itself with everything skydiving. They issue skydiving licenses ranging from an "A level" (acquired after 25 skydives) to a "D level" (earned after 500 skydives) and represent a progressive level of success and knowledge.
In the initial stage of an AFF program you will take part in ground instruction and instructor-led skydiving jumps. The first level is intended to provide students the chance to get into the sky quickly yet safely; you will be taught some of the tricks of the trade to use during your first skydive. Expect to learn how to maneuver your body, deploy the parachute properly and how to land safely. After completing the ground class, you are going to be accompanied by two AFF trainers on your first jump to provide you with extra stability and guide you through your initial jumps. Some people will be unnerved by the scrutiny of the trainers as you pass through the levels but it is all done for your safety. You should be improving at controlling your motions during the jumps. Level six is a special level. This level is where you first take to the sky solo. This occurs after a final evaluation of sorts. Your instructors need to confirm that you have the skills required. A jump master will follow along to assess your performance and upon successful conclusion, you are qualified for certification. With all said and done, you will have made at least 25 jumps and finished all requirements to get your USPA 'A' license.
